Rules of Golf:  Quick Tips

1.  If a ball is lost, the penalty is stroke and distance.

Follow rule 27-2: “If a ball may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds, to save time the player may play another ball provisionally in accordance with Rule 27-1…”  Don’t forget to announce you are playing a provisional ball and play this ball before going forward to search for the original ball.

A ball is deemed lost if not found or identified as his by the player within five minutes.

See the “Rules of Golf” for other conditions resulting in a ball being deemed lost.  This is described in more detail here.

2.  You may not touch the ground of a hazard with your hand or a club.  Follow rule 13-4:  “Except as provided in the rules, before making a stroke at a ball that is in a hazard … the player must not:

a.      Test the condition of the hazard or a similar hazard;

b.      Touch the ground in the hazard or water in the water hazard with his hand or a club; or

c.      Touch or move a loose impediment lying in or touching the hazard.

 P.S.  If you are going to spend five minutes looking for a ball, let the group behind you play through first.

Handicap: Quick Tips

1.  Your handicap index and a course handicap for a competition are usually not the same number.  A course handicap is determined by applying the player’s Handicap Index to a Course Handicap Table or Course Handicap Formula.
